Postal Service has many handbooks and manuals to support maintenance operations. The
MS-63 is one of these manuals. This hand book covers responsibilities of the
maintenance manager such as the safety and health of maintenance employees and
the Overall maintenance program within his or her organization. Functions
covered in this publication include but are not limited to national maintenance
policies, technical instructions, labor agreements, safety programs,
organizational requirements, and performance standards. Senior maintenance
officials are responsible for ensuring that maintenance personnel are properly
trained and adequately equipped, understand their responsibilities, and
effectively complete their assigned task. Other
areas listed in the MS-63 include Maintenance operations that include the area
of responsibility of the effective use of resources in support of Mail
processing equipment, Building and equipment maintenance, Custodial Services,
and Field maintenance operations. It contains information for the Maintenance
Activity Reporting Scheduling Which is a data collection system, Preventive
Maintenance, one of the most important maintenance activities is to improve and
to prolong building and equipment life, avoid unplanned maintenance activity,
and to lower overall maintenance cost. The senior maintenance official must
determine and enforce local equipment preventive maintenance requirements, and
should require unbiased investigations of equipment breakdowns, malfunctions,
and inaccurate reporting. Chapter
5 of this publication talks about PM based on the inspections and written
condition reports that provide data for analysis and evaluation of causes and
corrective action. PM requires estimating, planning, scheduling and controlling
maintenance and repair. It also in detail defines the maintenance checklist form
(4777) instructions for maintenance actions required for the completion of pm
routes and to list the frequency for performing each action. These are some of
the areas covered by this manual.
